Warble Buoys trace invisible water materialities in a discreet intervention on the Danube Delta. Electrochemical sound bodies transduce shifting metabolic changes found in freshwater chemistry to subtle rhythmic textures. As they float, encounters between metal, freshwater, oxygen, and sediments create evolving sound patterns, making the wetland's inner chemistry audible.
Inspired by the galvanic principles of historical saltwater batteries¹, as well as the Method and Apparatus for generating Electricity² from freshwater, the work constructs sound buoys as electrochemical capacitors. Rather than relying on conventional power sources, a submerged ORP-like sensor made of metal plates listens to the water's electrical activity.
The Delta becomes part of the circuit. Oxygen concentration, water movement, atmospheric exposure and heavy metal concentrations all generate and modulate very small electrical currents. Equilibrium and stillness kill voltage while turbulence resonates into sound. Minimal components turn these tiny pulses into oscillations. The sounds appear organic, modulated by the evolving chemistry and circuitry instability. Glass funnels amplify the subtle rhythms that emerge, blending them in the natural soundscape.
Between artefact, instrument, and sensing probe, Warble Buoys operate as temporary assemblages. Activated by on-site waters and their sediments, the installation drifted with the Delta for several hours as a performative action in proximity to Sf. Gheorghe village. During this intervention, a Savi's warbler song made it impossible to tell which sounds came from which body.
